Beyond Safe Operation — What Defines a Good Test Switch

In protection and control systems built to ANSI standards, performance is not just about “safe switching.” Engineers must also evaluate configuration flexibility, installation practicality, and environmental endurance.

The TSBA Series ANSI-Type Test Switch from ODES was developed with these parameters in mind. It provides modular configuration options, robust electrical ratings, and accessories tailored for modern substation and OEM panel environments—helping engineers standardize both safety and usability in one package.

Modular Configuration for Real-World Flexibility

The TSBA series is based on three modular building blocks:


  • Single-phase current module (AB): one A-phase and one B-phase position, occupying two poles.

  • Three-phase current module (AAAB): three A-phase and one B-phase position, occupying four poles.

  • Type-1 general-purpose module: used for voltage, trip, or auxiliary contact circuits, occupying one pole.


Modules can be operated individually or linked through a mechanical tie bar, allowing two-pole or four-pole interlocked operation—ideal for three-phase testing or group isolation.

Typical factory configurations


  • TSBA-14-01 (AAAB + Type-1) – three current groups with multiple general-purpose contacts.

  • TSBA-14-02 – 14 general-purpose contacts.

  • TSBA-10-01 / -02 – 10-circuit versions for compact panel layouts.


Each front panel is clearly labeled, and switch handles can be color-coded by circuit function (black for current, red for voltage/trip). A dovetail groove at the handle tip accommodates circuit ID tags, simplifying asset identification and reducing wiring errors.

Field examples


  • Thailand HV switchgear integration project: used the “AAAB + Type-1” configuration with interlocked handles—one operation simultaneously isolated and shorted all three phases, cutting test time by ~40 %.

  • U.S. export transformer control cabinet: centralized current and trip circuits using the TSBA-14-01, enabling single-step testing of multiple loops and improving verification efficiency.

Wiring and ergonomics


  • Terminals accept 0.5–4 mm² × 2 conductors, recommended torque 1.2 N·m.

  • Compatible with ring and Y-type lugs.

  • Lockable front cover prevents accidental operation or foreign-object entry.

  • TSBA-14: 210 × 80 × 96.8 mm

  • TSBA-10: 159 × 80 × 96.8 mm Both are flush-mounted and can be installed side by side on a 2U rack panel, supporting pre-assembled delivery for OEM cabinet builders.


Accessories and Field Integration

The TSBA Series includes a full range of accessories for on-site testing:

  • FTA-14 / FTA-10 / FTA-S test plugs (standard ANSI Type A interface)

  • Mechanical tie bars (two-pole / four-pole interlock sets)

  • Terminal protective covers

  • Standard DCC-4 mm test leads (red/black)


Together, these components eliminate the need for ad-hoc shorting or patch cords and support repeatable, audit-ready testing procedures.
