Fewer Wires, Smarter Alarms

Complex wiring doesn’t have to be the price of functionality. Discover how ODES is making GIS alarm systems lighter and smarter at www.odes-electric.com

The Problem: Cable Clutter in Modern GIS Panels

In many GIS high-voltage switchgear projects, door-control wiring—the bundles of signal cables running from the cabinet body to the front door—remains a persistent challenge.

It’s common to see 30 or more wires, each several meters long, running through the door frame like a braided harness. This approach consumes hours of labor, complicates maintenance, and increases long-term failure risk due to constant bending at the hinge.

The ODES SFA610 Solution: One Cable Instead of Thirty

ree

The SFA610 Fault Alarm Unit replaces the traditional wire harness with a modular, plug-and-play system:

  • The main control module (C) mounts on the internal DIN rail and handles logic, 16 digital inputs, and 16 relay outputs.

  • The panel display module (M) installs on the cabinet door, providing 16 red alarm indicators plus four function keys — ACK, TEST, RESET, RECALL.

  • The two modules connect via a single pre-terminated communication cable, factory-tested and ready to install (standard 4 meters).

The result: a clean, structured connection that replaces dozens of door-control wires with one reliable cable — from “multi-wire through the door” to “one-cable connection.”

Compact Design, Clearer Alarms

Traditional door wiring has multiple pain points:

  • Limited panel space and poor visual clarity with many individual indicators.

  • Time-consuming wiring and troubleshooting.

  • Increased wear from repeated door movement.

The SFA610’s architecture addresses all of these:

  • Centralized alarm logic and relay outputs in the main control unit.

  • Simple front-panel display with unified alarm acknowledgment and reset operations.

  • Fewer connection points mean less risk of wiring errors and faster installation.

Modular Expansion — Ready for Larger Systems

Users often require both front-panel display and multiple dry-contact outputs, or additional channels for future expansion.

The SFA610 system adapts easily:

  • The base configuration (C + M) provides 16 alarm channels with relay outputs.

  • For extended systems, adding an E-module expands output capacity to 32 relays.

  • Expansion uses a 0.5-meter prewired cable between C and E — no new door wiring required.

  • Built-in Modbus protocol enables status communication and remote alarm management.

This modular concept supports scalable alarm architectures for projects of any size.

Cost Reduction Is More Than Material Savings

The SFA610’s advantage goes beyond cutting wire length — it optimizes the entire project lifecycle.

During manufacturing and assembly

  • Fewer materials: one 4-meter communication cable replaces more than 30 wires.

  • Reduced consumables: fewer terminals, markers, and heat-shrink labels.

  • Shorter assembly time: panel-side installation requires only fixing the display module and plugging in the cable.

During operation and maintenance

  • Fewer failure points: reduced door-hinge stress increases long-term reliability.

  • Faster fault tracing: built-in event log stores up to 200 alarm records for clear chronological review.

The SFA610 transforms what used to be a wiring task dependent on craftsmanship into a system-level design capability.

The SFA610 Fault Alarm Unit makes GIS cabinet wiring lighter, cleaner, and smarter. By consolidating multiple alarm indicators, reducing cable complexity, and introducing modular expansion, it helps utilities and OEMs simplify production, improve reliability, and modernize alarm management.

This isn’t just wire reduction — it’s engineering simplification done right.
